ENHANCE AIRPORT, SEAPORT
AND COURTHOUSE SAFETY
It is the duty of leadership at the top of BSO to make sure that everyone knows their role and to have them perform to the best of their abilities.
As you enter Port Everglades, exit an airplane or walk into the courthouse, you will see a uniformed BSO deputy. The protection of visitors and property at each of these locations is the responsibility of the sheriff’s office.
While you may see deputies working, what you do not see is the lack of support, nor the proper supervision and reinforcement to ensure that they do their jobs well. It is not the deputy’s fault. It is not their direct supervisors’ fault. It is the duty of leadership at the top of BSO to make sure that everyone knows their role and to have them perform to the best of their abilities.
BSO is short staffed at an international airport and does not have enough personnel to consistently patrol the flight line, perimeter and interior terminal buildings. We will increase staffing, support and training for BSO Deputies protecting the public at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport with a dedicated office.
At the Broward courthouses, BSO deputies and bailiffs are working under intense pressure to ensure that judges, attorneys, jurors, visitors and inmates are safe. This demanding and stressful task can put deputies at risk and requires them to be vigilant at all times. With structured supervision, effective procedures and training, we can improve the overall performance and safety in all Broward courthouses.
As your sheriff, I will seek additional funding for more staffing at the airport, seaport, courthouses and training along with advanced personal protective equipment to instill a commitment of professionalism at BSO so that we never let down our guard.
